Back up Mac camera recordings to a NAS or external drive

Set practical expectations for finished-file backup, fallback destinations and storage limits in Owl Cam Pro.

The maker of Owl Cam ·

Owl Cam saves recordings as ordinary MP4 files in a folder you choose. Pro can back up completed recordings to a configured destination such as a mounted NAS or external drive, and offers storage limits and retention rules.

Choose and test a destination

Connect or mount the destination, make sure the Mac can write to it, then configure it in Owl Cam’s storage settings. Record a short event, allow it to finish, and check that the completed file appears at the destination. Open a copied MP4 to test recovery rather than assuming a folder entry means a usable backup.

Understand fallback behavior

You can configure a primary and a fallback backup location. When neither is available, the engine waits and retries. A file successfully sent to the fallback should not be assumed to copy automatically to the primary after the primary returns. Monitor the destination that actually received the file.

Plan for long recordings and disk usage

Backup applies to finished files: an event that is still recording has not yet entered the finished-file backup process. Leave enough writable space for ongoing recording. Bitrate settings include an estimated hourly storage figure; use it to plan capacity, and configure Pro retention and cleanup rules to suit your needs. See the FAQ for details.
